There is a common narrative that self drive safaris are cheap safaris. That if anyone wishes to save big on their Safari in Uganda, it would be the best option. But once you inquire with most of the top car rental agencies in Uganda, you come to learn that not all the self drive trips are budget trips. Therefore for in case you are a budget traveller, you need to buckle yourself with the following tips to get the best out of your self drive safari; safaris in Uganda

    Hire a Diesel Car

In most cases, budget travellers think in terms of the car rental prize charged by the agency per day. But this is not all you should think about when trying to save on your Uganda car rental. You should consider the fuel type and the engine size. For instance; if you are opting for a Land cruiser Prado; you have the luxury to look for a diesel 3000cc Prado, a petrol 2700cc Prado or a petrol 3400cc Prado. These are the most common types available for self-drive.

Each of the above Prados has its own advantages which are never discussed in most cases when you are hiring a car. The 2700cc Prado is the weakest of the three but it consumes more fuel than the 3000cc diesel Prado. Therefore, in order to save big on fuel yet getting enough off road power on your trip; it is always wise to consider a diesel car above a petrol engine car.

Travel In a Group of 3-4 People

It is wise not to fair the car rental bills all by yourself. It is always better to look out for the best dates where you and a few of your friends can tag along. Of course this does not apply to lone travellers.

When you travel as a group of three to four people, you do not even have to worry about the season of the year since the cost will be evenly distributed among four people. With this cost sharing; you are sure of spending far less on even what is considered luxury vehicles.

    Consider Travelling in Low Seasons

Uganda safari seasons can be classified into two; the low seasons and peak season. The low seasons are the months of March, April, May, October and November. The peak seasons are in the months of June, July, August, December and January. There are also the intermediate months of February and September.

In order to safe big on your self drive in Uganda, it is recommended you travel during the seasons. It is easier to have a better bargain during the low season months than during the peak season months.

    Sleep in Towns

Instead of spending the night in the national park, it is wise to spend your nights in the town. Towns offer cheaper accommodation. You can easily get the same quality of accommodation offered in the national parks at a third of the price of what is charged in the national park basic accommodation.

However you have to put in mind the fact that you will have to wake up earlier enough to catch your early morning activities in the national parks.

    Consider Camping in National Parks

In case you wish to spend some nights in Uganda’s national parks, it is recommended you opt for camping. In most national parks, there are camping grounds where you can either pitch your own tent or set campsites. Most campsites have their own camping gear; therefore you simply have to drive to these camping sites; pay the camping fee and you will be offered camping gear and camping space.

However it should be noted that not all campsites offer camping gear. Therefore it is wise to first inquire with the campsite to avoid surprises.
